  1. I was staring at the screen in disbelief when I tried to download the Chromecast extension for my HTC One where it said it supported windows, linux, Mac, but not Android? Its like Microsoft coming out with a new software and oh, it doesn't run on Windows? But based on what Google has done with Google Maps nav, not surprising I guess.

Chromecast Setup For TV, Smartphone, and PC:

Although Google provides a video explaining “How to Cast” once the device has been set up, this article aims to explain how the basic set up works in the first place. Make sure you have the Chromecast, a Chromecast enabled device, the Micro USB to USB power cable, and wall adapter. Also, make sure you to download the Google Home app from either the Apple App Store or Google Play.

  • Plug in your Chromecast App into your TV’s HDMI port and the USB cable into a power outlet nearby (especially if using a Chromecast Ultra). If you’ve done everything properly, you should see a small LED light up on your Chromecast.
  • If you haven’t downloaded the Google Home app yet, do it from any app store. If you’re using a computer, use Google Chrome to visit the Chromecast website. If using the Chromecast website, Chrome will then look for Chromecast devices that need to be set up. Turn on your TV and switch to the correct HDMI source (The input will read “Set me up”).
  • In the upper right corner of your mobile phone or tablet, or Chrome browser (After it finishes searching for a device that matches the name of your Chromecast App) select ‘Devices in Google Home’. Select Set Me Up and tap on Continue.
  • The Setup will then try to connect automatically to your Chromecast’s Wi-Fi hotspot. If that doesn’t happen, then manually connect to the Wi-Fi hotspot through the Wi-Fi drop-down menu on your device.
  • A code will appear on both your device and TV. Check if they’re matching and if they are, tap or click on Yes.
  • Give your Chromecast device a name (e.g.: Dining Room, Mike’s Chromecast App, etc.) or leave it with the default name. Select your country. Tap on Looks Good.
  • Connect your Chromecast to the Internet by choosing your Wi-Fi network (or connect an Ethernet cable if you’re using Ultra Chromecast). Enter your password and click connect. Make sure your computer or mobile device and Chromecast are on the same network.
  • You can now sign into your Google Account so that you can have access to your preferences on YouTube and Google.
  • Now that the basic setup is completed, you will receive a list of all Cast devices available to you.
  • You will receive a tutorial from Google, teaching you ‘How to Cast.’

The Google Cast SDK includes API libraries and sample application code to helpyour applications go big. These APIs are documented in the APIreferences, and the sample code is discussed in theAndroid, iOS, andChrome Sender and theReceiver app guides.

Note:Sample apps and codelabtutorials are also available to help you get started.

App components

Here's what you need to build a Cast app.

  • A sender application, written for the Android, iOS, or Chrome platformwhich uses the following Cast APIs:

    • Android API - for features, see AndroidSender Applications
    • iOS API - for features, seeiOS Sender Applications
    • Chrome API - for features, see Chrome Sender Applications
  • A receiver application that handles communication between the sender app and the receiver device. You have the following options:

    • The Default Media Receiver presented with the Google Cast branding and styling.
    • The Styled Media Receiver for which you can develop the styles andbranding. See Styled Media Receiver.
    • A custom receiver, as described in Customreceiver that implements the ReceiverAPI and handles custom messages fromyour sender app; it may also interface with the media player typesprovided through the Media Player Library.

How you implement your receiver may depend upon which media typesyour application needs to support.

In accordance with the Google Cast SDK Additional Developer Termsof Service, a Cast media application must use the MediaPlayback Messagesdefined for the SDK to control media playback on the receiver. Doing so providesthe media app with a consistent user experience across platforms and it ensuresthat a Cast application will support new and future use cases. These structuresalso support custom data, where appropriate, and an application may define itsown messages for commands not supported by the SDK.

Download the Cast 4.4.6 iOS Sender API libraries:

Key Point: Starting with version 4.3.1, Cocoapods uses static libraries to avoid duplicate symbol warnings caused by a shared Protobuf library dependency when using the Firebase and Cast SDKs together. Although this change will result in a larger download, the final app size will not increase.

If the size difference is a concern for your situation, download the dynamic library to get a size similar to pre-4.3.1 versions of the Cocoapod library.
